This is exactly what I have been thinking. It was even more exemplified by the fact that we are playing a team with seemingly the exact same philosophy and what can happen when its done correctly.
The swing selection has been horrific. Manny's second at bat in yesterdays game was some of the worst I've seen.
I wonder if this is still all a result from that injury stretch. If the Fernando and Manny started pressing while those guys were away and now it has compounded into these terrible choices. It would be great to see a comparison of the team before the injuries when we were off to a great start to the great slump.
I seem to swing between eff-AJ to "obviously much smarter than I am" AJ (these are not mutually exclusive). My fear going into this season is that we would have to be cleaning up Seidler's spending spree. Deservedly beloved by the fans but sensing his impending mortality, seemed to push for a win. Sad outcome. Given the commitments to Machado (will hurt later), Bogaerts (hurts now), Tatis (good) and Merrill (great), and the state of the farm (seemingly pretty barren, save a couple of guys), it is going to take some mastery to bring meaningfully improve this roster for awhile.
They seemed to strike gold last year, as you mentioned, with Profar, Peralta, Solano and Higashioka all produced well on budget salaries. This year's version showing how hard that is to replicate each year.
Such a great essay. Great to know what is happening but getting to the “why” is always more interesting.
